AutoGPT
Overview
An open-source autonomous AI agent that chains GPT-4 "thoughts" into a self-directed loop (plan, act, observe, repeat) to pursue a goal you set, with internet access, file I/O, memory, and the ability to write and run its own code. Created by British game developer Toran Bruce Richards (handle @SigGravitas, company Significant Gravitas Ltd.). It defined the "autonomous agent" category and became one of the fastest-starred repos in GitHub history. Current scale (GitHub REST API, June 2026): 184,965 stars, 46,141 forks, 440 open issues; the repo was created March 16, 2023 (api.github.com/repos/Significant-Gravitas/AutoGPT). Notably the March 16 creation date exactly matches the Know Your Meme "EntrepreneurGPT" origin date, independently confirming the project's prehistory began ~2 weeks before the March 30 public demo. The project has since pivoted from the original CLI experiment into the "AutoGPT Platform" (low-code agent builder) at agpt.co. Founder account @SigGravitas: 49,712 followers (June 2026, via scrape); product account @Auto_GPT: 13,701 followers.
First public appearance
The earliest public footprint is on X, not Hacker News or a blog. On March 30, 2023, 13:47 UTC, @SigGravitas posted a demo video: "Latest Demo of Auto-GPT, an open-source experiment to make #GPT4 into a fully autonomous AI. You can now give the AI whatever task you like! If you would like to give it a try yourself, feel free to check out the GitHub repo in the comments below, it's free!" (verified via scrape: 202 likes, 44 RTs, 39,611 views, 112 bookmarks). tweet. The KSP: a *fully autonomous* GPT-4, give it any task, free and open-source, with a demo video as the hook and the repo link one click away. Format: an owned X post with embedded demo video. Note the project's prehistory: per Know Your Meme, Richards first built it around March 16, 2023 as "EntrepreneurGPT" / "Entrepreneur-GPT," an experiment to give GPT-4 autonomy in business (the April 2023 README still credited @SigGravitas as "the creator of Entrepreneur-GPT" and linked an @En_GPT account for the AI itself). The original GitHub repo was Torantulino/Auto-GPT (Toran's handle), later moved to the Significant-Gravitas org.

Channels & accounts
- GitHub
- Significant-Gravitas/AutoGPT (orig
Torantulino/Auto-GPT), ~185k stars, ~46.1k forks (June 2026). The primary owned asset and the growth surface itself. - Founder X
- @SigGravitas (Toran Bruce Richards), 49,712 followers (June 2026), account created Aug 2017, bio "Inventor of AutoGPT / World #1 AI GitHub Repo by Stars." This was the launch megaphone.
- Product X
- @Auto_GPT, 13,701 followers, created Apr 4, 2023 (spun up days after the viral moment).
- AI persona X (early)
- @En_GPT (Entrepreneur-GPT), the AI's "own" account, linked from the early README as a community-engagement gimmick.
- Website
- agpt.co (the AutoGPT Platform).
- Discord
- discord.gg/autogpt, linked from the README since the earliest April 2023 captures (community hub; exact current member count not verified here).
- Docs
- docs.agpt.co (developer documentation for the platform).
- No evidence that a blog/newsletter, YouTube, Telegram, or HuggingFace presence drove early growth; the engine was X plus GitHub. YouTube/press coverage was earned, not owned.
Amplification & KOLs
- Andrej Karpathy (then OpenAI, ex-Tesla AI director, 3M+ followers): the single biggest amplifier. His Apr 2, 2023 quote-tweet ("Next frontier of prompt engineering imo: 'AutoGPTs'") did ~1.73M views and effectively named the category. Organic/earned. tweet
- Ethan Mollick (Wharton professor, prolific AI commentator): demoed Auto-GPT autonomously running a business simulation and delegating to sub-agents (per KYM). Organic/earned.
- Varun Mayya (founder/creator, large following): widely-shared clip of Auto-GPT installing Node.js and spinning up a server unprompted (per KYM). Organic/earned.
- Hacker News community
- the Apr 2 front-page submission was by a third party (keithba), indicating genuine organic pull beyond the founder's own posting.
- Tech press
- Vice/Motherboard (Apr 4, 2023), and subsequent coverage across the AI-news cycle (it "repeatedly trended on Twitter" per Wikipedia). Earned.
- Adjacent project halo
- Auto-GPT rose alongside BabyAGI (Yohei Nakajima) and the broader "autonomous agents" wave of spring 2023; the two were constantly compared, each amplifying the category. Earned/structural.
- No evidence of paid influencer spend or paid media; amplification reads as fully organic/earned, riding the immediate post-GPT-4-launch hype window.
Traction inflection
The breakout is a tight 3-day chain on X in the first week of April 2023, with one clear pivot point: the April 1, 2023 "Massive Update: Code Execution" tweet (4.22M views, 9,255 likes, 1,635 RTs), which Andrej Karpathy then quote-tweeted on April 2 as "the next frontier of prompt engineering" (1.73M views, to 3M+ followers). That pairing converted a niche demo into a named category and sent the repo vertical.
Why this specific moment: Toran's own posting had a clear step-change. The Mar 30 launch demo did ~39.6K views and 202 likes (good, not viral). The Mar 31 "it can speak" post did ~16K views. Then the Apr 1 "it writes and runs its own code to self-improve" framing did 4.22M views, a roughly 100x jump over the launch tweet. The recursive-self-improvement narrative was the payload that made it irresistible to share. Karpathy quoting *that exact tweet* the next day put it in front of millions of the most influential AI accounts and gave the thing a name ("AutoGPTs"), which is what categories need to spread.
Evidence it actually moved the needle: verified tweet metrics (39.6K to 4.22M view jump in 48 hours; Karpathy QT at 1.73M views/4,780 likes); the repo trended #1 on GitHub globally by Apr 3 (KYM); "Auto-GPT" trended on Twitter with 6,600+ tweets and the repo hit 30k+ stars by Apr 12 (KYM); and the verified Wayback capture showing 49.2k stars by Apr 14, 2023, about two weeks after launch (corroborating the "30k stars in 13 days, 100k a few weeks later, fastest-growing OSS repo in GitHub history" claims). HN front page (153 pts, Apr 2) added the developer-credibility layer on the same day as Karpathy.
Confidence: high that the Apr 1 "code execution / self-improvement" framing plus the Apr 2 Karpathy quote-tweet is the inflection. Multiple convergent, independently-verified signals (the 100x view jump on the founder's own timeline, the dated Karpathy QT directly quoting the breakout tweet, the GitHub-trending and star-curve timing, the same-day HN front page) all cluster in a 72-hour window. The one nuance: the underlying *substrate* was the GPT-4 hype wave (GPT-4 shipped Mar 14, 2023), so AutoGPT rode a rising tide; but the specific spike is well-pinned to Apr 1-2.
Techniques & tactics
- Single jaw-dropping demo as the unit of marketing: every milestone shipped as a short demo video on X (autonomy, voice, code execution), each a fresh "look what it can do now" moment.
- A narrative the internet couldn't ignore: "fully autonomous AI that writes and runs its own code to self-improve," landing exactly in the post-GPT-4 AGI-anxiety/excitement window. Mild danger framing ("worryingly has no foibles... exploiting human tragedy for profit," continuous-mode warnings) added shareability.
- Concrete, copyable use-cases: named example agents (Chef-GPT, EntrepreneurGPT) so onlookers immediately saw what to do with it.
- Open-source-as-distribution + zero friction: MIT-licensed, free, repo link "in the comments," copy-paste install in the README. The repo itself was the funnel.
- Category creation, then category ownership: the name "AutoGPT/AutoGPTs" (crystallized by Karpathy) became the label for an entire emerging product class; the project owned the term.
- Rode a bigger drop: launched two weeks after GPT-4, branding itself as the showcase of what GPT-4 could do autonomously ("#GPT4" in every early post).
- Founder-as-channel + an AI persona: distribution ran through @SigGravitas, supplemented by a dedicated product handle and a tongue-in-cheek "the AI's own" account (@En_GPT).
- Milestone-marketing of the star count itself: the GitHub star trajectory became the story ("fastest-growing repo ever"), and the README leaned into it with star/Twitter/Discord badges and a sponsor wall.
- Build-in-public + community capture: Discord and sponsors section from the first week; 110 contributors within ~2 weeks turned curiosity into a contributor flywheel.
- Convert hype to capital: parlayed the attention into a $12M round (Redpoint) within ~6 months and pivoted from experiment to platform.
